We are in our ninth year of providing a home for the
arts in the West Plains area. Local artists show their work in our gallery.
We present regular musical performances, and host several area special
events. This page has information about some of the happenings at the

David Lakish
This longtime Ozark County painter creates pastoral
images and landscapes in the Impressionist tradition.
Michael McClure
-- Ozarks Impressionist Painter
McClure works in watermedia, pastel and oils. He
presently operates Michael McClure Fine Art & Murals, a studio/art
gallery near Willow Springs. He divides his time between fine art painting
and murals.
Kitty
Chrysalis
Kitty Chrysalis is a fiber artist. Her recent work is a result of her
love of recycling, and is made mostly from salvaged copper wiring. She
also uses some found objects and lampworked glass beads as focal points
in her pieces. Her motto is, “Work with what you've got.”
Dana
Leake
Dana Leake, marquetarian, is a long-time resident of the Ozarks. He has
had a life-long interest in woodworking, and for the past several years
has turned his hand to the ancient art of marquetry. This allows him the
artistic freedom to create his art while making a conscious effort to
respect the woodlands surrounding his home and studio at Dogwood Hill.
Susan Leslie Lumsden
The original “Rebel Quilter,” Susan Lumsden's art quilts were
a great hit in our gallery. Susan recently served as curator for Roots
of Racism: Ignorance and Fear, an art quilt show touring nationally.
Bruce
Carr
In 2002 Bruce was experiencing retinal detachment
in his left eye. Emergency surgery was able to re-attach the retina, but
the vision in that eye is now impaired. In February of 2004, he began
an apprenticeship as a photographer, either in spite of or because of
the impairment. In June, he displayed an exhibit of paintings, poems and
photographs at the Yellow House, entitled The Dismantled Eye. He
also entered his first photography show at the Harlin Museum. His photograph
entitled Kitty received a Best In Show award. Click

We have regular musical performances, ranging from bluegrass, country, and rock to Celtic, jazz, and classical. Among the artists who have performed at the Yellow House over the years are the following:
Still
on the Hill
Kelly Mulholland and Donna Henschell live
in Arkansas and perform internationally. Encompassing bluegrass and folk,
their repertoire is entertaining, and the duo are visually dynamic as
well as musically gifted.
Jim
Scott
An immensely talented musician and singer,
Jim sings songs which make us think--and he manages to make us laugh,
too.
Stan
Slaughter
The "Eco Troubadour," Stan's music and
his message are not only entertaining but educational. He's tremendously
amusing and thought-provoking.
3rd Window
Performing as a duo, 3rd Window put on a show that was creative, unique
and full of energy. 3rd Window blended rock, folk, jazz, tribal and funk
with soulful lyrics for a compelling musical sound.
Marideth Sisco
A native Ozarker, storyteller and songbird, Marideth
wows the crowd every time with an eclectic mix of tunes ranging from old
time country to torch songs.
The Fantods
Led by our favorite microbrewer, Steve Markley, on
banjo, the Fantods perform newgrass music. Dana Leake, Gary Due, and Dennis
Crider fill out the rest of the group.
Brad Smith
In addition to being our longest serving board
member, Brad's music is a favorite. He performs folk-flavored rock, including
original compositions by local musicians and poets.
We have had a number of speakers present programs at the Yellow House. Among them have been members of the community. Others have been Missouri Humanities Council speakers from their Speakers Bureau.
Simon Jones
In conjunction with the National
Audio Theatre Festival in June 2003, Simon Jones, the voice of
Arthur Dent in the BBC's production of A Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy, gave a reading of new material by Douglas Adams.
David
Ossman
Yes, that David Ossman. This member of the
Firesign Theater performed a benefit for the Yellow House while he was
in West Plains as part of the National
Audio Theater Festival in May 2002. The evening included Ossman's
performance with backing music by local musicians.
Daniel Woodrell
West Plains resident and author, including novels
Woe to Live On (made into the film Ride with the Devil by
director Ang Lee) and Tomato Red, spoke about writing at the Yellow
House in 2000.
Dr. Fred Pfister
Dr. Pfister, editor of The Ozark Mountaineer,
has presented two programs at the Yellow House:
- Whatever Happened to Alf Bolin’s Head?: Bushwhackers, Guerrillas, and the Civil War in the Ozarks: 1860-1900
- Walt Whitman (1819-1892): Memories of President Lincoln
Alex Primm
An independent scholar specializing in oral history
and the Ozarks presented Rivers
of Timber: The Big Piney and Beyond. Daniel Boone’s son began rafting
lumber in the 1820s. The trade continued until the Depression. Men and
women who worked on Ozark rivers left stories, folklore and a wilderness
culture which amazes and entertains.
Denise Henderson Vaughn
An award-winning reporter for the West Plains
Daily Quill, Vaughn is also a long-time member of the Ozarks Resource
Center board. Vaughn has her own project with ORC in which she travels
to area schools discussing the karst topography of the Ozarks. She presented
her program at the Yellow House.
The Yellow House is also the home of some area special events:
Earth Day
An
outdoor festival presented by the Ozarks Resource Center. For the past
five years, our parent organization, Ozarks Resource Center, has organized
West Plains' Earth Day celebration. For two years the event took place
on the grounds of the Yellow House Community Arts Center.
St. Patrick's Day Feast
Each
March 17, the Yellow House has a special St. Patrick's Day dinner. The
menu includes corned beef and cabbage, vegetables, rolls, and desserts.
We also offer Celtic music for our diners.
The Italian Dinner
Held
on or near Columbus Day, the Yellow House has established a new tradition--the
Italian Dinner. The first dinner featured unforgettable lasagna and the
talents of Pamela Pyles Linkhart, world-class opera singer.
The Hallowe’en Ball
Each
year the Yellow House becomes the Haunted House, featuring the traditional
performance of the “Monster Mash.”
Concert at the River
Annual outdoor benefit concert presented by Ozarks Resource Center and the Yellow House.
The Yellow House is a project of Ozarks Resource Center, a not-for-profit organization
